The Department of Mathematics, Nazareth College of Education for Women established at the inception of the institution in 2006 offers Maths paper I for U.G. student teachers and Maths paper I for P.G. student teachers.
• To enable the teacher trainees to adopt different methodologies in teaching learning process.
• To equip them with various psychological method to cater to the diverse needs of the students.
• To create an awareness among the teacher trainees to adopt method of teaching Mathematics by relating the concepts with real life situation.
• To enable the teacher trainees to attain meaningful learning which in turn caters to diverse needs of the students.
Mathematics curriculum is systematically planned with the view of fulfilling the current needs of the society and the objectives of teaching Mathematics at high school and higher secondary level.
The units of Mathematics paper I us designed in such a way that it caters to the needs of the student teachers who will be teaching at the high school and the units in Mathematics Paper II is cnstructed to equip the post graduate teacher trainees to teach at the higher secondary level.
All the activities of the department of Mathematics is well planned in advance, so that equal importance is given for both academics and co-curricular activities which leads to the overall development of the teacher trainees. The students teachers are encouraged to execute their plan of work in a systematic and in orderly manner.
Apart from the theory papers for Mathematics paper I and Ill student teachers are trained in the following practical works.
• Demonstration classes are conducted by the teacher educators.
• Practising various skills of micro-teaching.
• Teaching Practice in schools.
• Observation classes by the guide teachers.
• Preparation of instructional aids both projected and non-projected, models and activity charts.
• Preparation of Albums, PLM, instructional cards and unit plan.
• Constructing and administering an achievement test and preparing statistics record.
• Web analysis and Evaluation of Mathematics text book.
• Practising of concept attainment model.
Current affairs in Mathematics are updated every year through different programmes. Ramanujam Centenary year was celebrated this year 2011-12.
The department of Mathematics organize guest lectures in order to provide in depth understanding relating to the subject to real life situation.
The department of Mathematics celebrate department day every year inorder to highlight the importance of Mathematics with other disciplines.
The department of Mathematics conducts various programmes like Debates and competitions with the view to emphasise the importance of Maths with other disciplines.
(a) Competition
Student teachers are motivated to participate in competitions like Buzz section, quiz and debates.
(b) Colour day
Every year the department of Mathematics celebrates a unique color, highlighting the importance of that color and various cultural activities are also staged.
(c) Debates
Debates are organised on various topics like
• “Math the queen of all science”.
• “Need of Mathematics in life”
• Produced 100% results since the inception of this college till date.
• Mrs. Saravanna Priya secured 9th place at the district level. She was the district topper of the year 2009-2010.
The management encourages the staff to present papers and to attend seminars and conferences at the national and international level in order to upgrade the recent trends in teaching methodologies.
