About the Department:

The Department of Physical Science was established from the inception of the institution, from the year 2006. Since then continuous efforts are put forth for preparing teachers for the pedagogical shift related to teaching-learning in science.

Vision:

• To equip the Student teachers with various pedagogical skills and methodologies in teaching science
• To bring an overall development of the Student teachers and thereby equip them to face the global demands.

Mission:

• To provide best resources and methodology to impart Quality education in science.
• To organise various co-curricular programs for better conceptual understanding of science
• To enable Student teachers imbibe values through science teaching.

Curricular Activities:

• Student teachers are trained in using learner centric approaches and strategies in physical science, skills of micro teaching and class management.
• Practical work includes the preparation of improvised apparatus, investigatory projects ,Preparation of PLM, flash cards, Album, audio and video lessons on scientific concepts

Infrastructure:

• The science classroom is well furnished and ventilated.
• Physical science laboratory is well equipped to conduct physics and chemistry experiments till higher secondary level.
• Bulletin board for the department is available for students to display science articles.

Co-Curricular Activities:

• Department day is celebrated every year highlighting the importance of science.
• Colour day is celebrated every year by the trainees to impart the significance of colors and the scientific concepts.
• Debates, buzz session, role play , discussions are organised related to science topics.

Guest Lectures:

Guest Lectures are organized to update the student teachers with current trends in science teaching.

Remedial Coaching Classes:

The remedial coaching classes are organized for the slow learners to improve their academic performance. Simplified learning materials with mind map for the pedagogical topics are provided for better understanding of the concepts. Question bank in pedagogy of physical science is also made accessible to student teachers.

Edufest Exhibition:

The instructional materials (science models) prepared by the trainees through improvisation, highlighting scientific principles are exhibited for the school students and teachers.

Tutor Ward System:

Once in a week tutor-ward meetings are conducted. Students are given freedom to express their views and grievances. Guidance and counselling is given when needed.

Eco-Club:

Student teachers are encouraged to participate in various Eco-friendly activities , environmental awareness programs and poster making competitions organized by the Eco-Club.

Department Achievements:

University 9th Rank: Vasanthapriya (2007 – 2008) 100% first class results in University Examinations. Student teachers are encouraged to participate in state level physical science model making competition and bagged prizes

Faculty Development Program:

The faculty keeps updating on the recent trends in teaching methodologies and innovative strategies by participating and presenting papers in seminars, workshops and conferences at National and International level, besides publishing research articles in books and journals.

The Staff:

Master trainer in INTEL, UGC – NET Qualified, Certificate course in Swayam on e-content development.

Awards:

The faculty received the “Best Teacher Award and Dr. Radhakrishnan teacher excellence award from Lions club.

• Imparting values, use of diverse pedagogical practices, developing problem solving skills, nurturing creativity and critical thinking.

Future Plan:

• To encourage students to further explore and use Open Educational Resources for science teaching.
• To involve student teachers in research projects reflecting the trends in Physical science Education.
• To organize Inter-Collegiate Model making competition for nurturing innovation and creativity.
